    In the Old World the word generally used is tundra, a term originating from the Finnish word tunturi meaning a treeless plain. The tundra everywhere is dotted with lakes, transected by small streams and covered with low heath, although in more sheltered places and along river courses and lake shores there are rather high shrub. Where the ground is moist extensive bogs exist, while in the driest parts and in places that are particularly exposed to the wind or where soil is very poor and scanty,the vegetation does not form a continuous cover and the plants are scattered, so that the bare underground is the dominant feature of the landscape. .

Better seem to fit Swed. fala f. `(treeless) plain, heathe', OCS polje `field' from ORuss. polъ `open, free' (Persson Beitr. 1, 228); (but hardly to παλάμη, πέλανος)}. - Here also Έπιπολαί pl. name of the heights near Syracuse (Th.).

    PELADO A stock figure in Mexican theatre and film, the pelado is a kind of rural anti-hero cum lovable rogue who survives by his quick wits in the foreign environment of the city. The Mexican actor and comedian Mario Moreno (1911-94) based the character Cantinflas, for which he is famous all over the Spanish-speaking world, on the pelado. The pelado is closely related to the literary figure of the pícaro and forms part of a long line of anti-heroic characters in Hispanic literature.
